About Birkett Racing
Julia Birkett
Julia has trained over 300 winners in her own right spanning 24 years. Most people will know Julia by her maiden name- Feilden. She has a reputation for rejuvenating inexpensive horses as well as realising the full potential of young stock. Before training she had a successful career in the saddle as an amateur jockey. She has an array of experience under her belt including working as a secretary for Clive Brittain and Pat Haslam, she also taught as an instructor at the British Racing School. The best horses under her care over the years include Spirit Of Sharjah- second highest rated 2yo in Europe 2007 and Najaaba bought for just £800 she went on to win 5 consecutive races and be crowned All- Weather Horse Of The Season 2003/4.
Shelley Birkett
With 10 years in the saddle riding over 100 winners, including a Listed winner, Shelley has a huge knowledge of a variety of horses of all levels. She was apprentice to top northern trainer David O'Meara for 3 years before retiring from the saddle in 2020 and spending 2 years as secretary to William Knight. She also spent time with Racing TV on a media internship. After assisting her mother, Julia, for two more seasons the time was right to join the training ranks in 2025.
Our Vision
At Birkett Racing our vision is to provide fun, affordable ownership for a variety of budgets. At Harraton Stud we are able to offer our horses acres of lush turn out all year round, which is unique for a yard in Newmarket. We also have full access to the world famous Jockey Club Gallops to exercise our horses daily. Visitors to the yard often comment on how relaxed our racehorses are which we pride ourselves on. Julia's motto throughout her career has been to treat owners and horses as individuals, which is something both Julia & Shelley feel strongly about. We are dedicated to succeeding and want our owners to have the best possible experience of racehorse ownership on and off the track.
